Moisture Intrusion in Your Home

I have inspected several homes recently which had mild to severe water penetration issues. Typically, mold growth is only around the corner when a water leak exists. Mold growth in the home can easily cause a litany of severe problems from health concerns (asthma, allergies, etc.) to structural damage in the home. However, we will save the mold topic for another ‘post’ … let’s focus on water penetration in the home so you can take some preventative measures to ensuring that you won’t be a victim of a ‘fearsome fungus’.

Mold Basics

The key to mold control is moisture control. If mold is a problem in your home, the mold should be removed and the moisture source should be repaired. It is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.

Poor air circulation, high humidity undetected leaks and unclean air filters can all contribute to elevated mold conditions in your home.  In most cases, there is no visible mold in the home, however, this does not mean that you are in the clear.  Several clients have called me this year explaining that there allergic syptoms that had been progressing over several months.  Some were advised by their Doctors to get tested for mold allergies.  Through air testing, we were able to determine that several of the homes had very high mold conditions causing family members to become very sick.  Professional remediation was necessary in many of these cases.
